Lyon is unique in that it lies at the confluence of two major rivers, the Rhone and the Saone. This has made the town particularly appealing to tourists, with an older, hillier area around the Saône and another more modern cityscape near the Rhône, on land that was formerly characterized by large swamps.
The Rhone river 812 km long from its source to the St. Gotthard in Swiss Alps to plunge into the Mediterranean Sea in the Camargue. Its course is marked by its geographically natural crossing of Lake Geneva to the French-Swiss border, humanly by the presence of Lyon, the regional capital, and economically by the presence of hydro-electric dams, several nuclear-hungry cooling water and by inland navigation which is now Lyon 1 inland port french. It is also marked by a fairly large impetuosity which caused many floods which some very important, the history of Lyon.
