Vieux-Lyon

A tourist visiting the city of Lyon on holiday, you are standing in Place Bellecour, the square in the heart of the Presqu'île peninsula. Feel free to cross the Saône over Pont Bonaparte (‘Bonaparte Bridge') and you will be in Lyon's oldest neighborhood, the 5th District (69005). This quarter, called Vieux Lyon (‘Old Lyon'), is Lyon's medieval and Renaissance area. It is located at the foot of Fourviere Hill.

Université

Today, Lyon's "University district" is in fact a university with several campuses or centers spread throughout the city and its nearby suburbs. Until the 1950s and 1960s the departments of Arts, Sciences and Law were located in buildings on the left bank of the Rhone built around the Pont de l'Université (‘University Bridge') and the street of the same name in the 7th District of Lyon (69007).

Préfecture

The Rhône Prefecture is located in the 6th District of Lyon (69006) along the Rhone River. This district is renowned for its quality of life, with many opulent buildings in which a number of Lyon's more affluent citizens live. This personality becomes even stronger the closer we get to the Parc de la Tête d'or.

Terreaux

Place des Terreaux, at the foot of the Croix Rousse hill in the heart of Lyon's 1st District (69001), could today be called Place de l'Hôtel de Ville (‘City Hall Square') if it had not been marked by a long history along with other districts of Lyon.

Vaise

This area of Lyon, the heart of the city's 9th District (69009), is today home to many large-scale communication infrastructure projects, office buildings and residences. Your activities have taken you to this neighborhood and you wish to find out more, amazed at the magnitude of the worksites in the area.

Brotteaux

Brotteaux district which occupies the northeastern part of the 6th arrondissement of Lyon (69006) has a name marked by the station of the same name, built in 1858 and operated at the time as the station of Geneva. The destinations served by that station on the PLM (Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée) were actually Ambérieu and Geneva. 

Opéra

This centerpiece of Lyon's 1st District (69001), located near Place des Terreaux and Hotel de Ville (City Hall) in the very heart of the Presqu'île peninsula, is a short walk from the Banks of the Rhône. Here, you will discover the Opéra neighborhood, the Mecca of Lyon's musical tradition. If you are staying nearby, you will definitely want to visit this monument!

Tête d'Or

The Tête d'Or district is known above all for the Parc de la Tête d'Or, located in the northern part of the left bank of the Rhône, in the 6th District of the city (69006). This 105-hectare park is one of the France's most beautiful and largest urban parks.

Rhône

Lyon is unique in that it lies at the confluence of two major rivers, the Rhone and the Saone. This has made the town particularly appealing to tourists, with an older, hillier area around the Saône and another more modern cityscape near the Rhône, on land that was formerly characterized by large swamps.

Saône

The city of Lyon was built at the confluence of the Rhone and the Saône, whose source lies at the foot of the cliffs of the Faucilles Moutains in the Vosges. The 480 km-long river is particularly calm, which has long made it a practical, pleasant navigable waterway. The river's tributary, the Doubs, which joins it in the Saône-et-Loire region at Verdun-sur-le-Doubs, contributes significantly to its flow and also to its floods.

Presqu'île

The Presqu'île district lies between the Rhône and Saône Rivers, with Perrache at the southern end and the Croix-Rousse to the north. This is the very heart of Lyon, featuring a number of historical and economic landmarks. The land was reclaimed over the years from the wetlands created by flooding of the Rhone River.

Perrache

In the heart of Lyon's 2nd District (69002), the Perrache neighborhood is symbolized by the eponymous train station that has itself long been the symbol of railway traffic in Lyon. Today largely replaced by the Part-Dieu train station, Perrache has become the hub of Lyon's public transport network, with subway line A connecting with tramway lines T1 and T2 and TCL bus lines.

Part-Dieu

The Part-Dieu neighborhood, located in the 3rd District of Lyon (69003), is considered as Lyon's second "downtown", after the Presqu'île. This neighborhood is today France's second-largest business district, after La Défense in Paris.

Croix-Rousse

Bellecour

Place Bellecour, the heart of Lyon's 2nd district (69002), is the biggest square in Lyon and the third largest in France after the Quinconces in Bordeaux and Place de la Concorde in Paris. It is also the largest pedestrian square in Europe, as cars have been restricted to a large underground parking lot.
